Old Cowboy Painting completed 1985

I painted this one about twenty-six years ago. It was hidden away in a closet ... actually, I had forgotten all about it. 20"x16" oil on masonite.

Caleb Reading completed 12/27/2010

I painted this one, of Caleb, to match the other of Nathan. I'm very proud of them both! 8"x10" Oil on linen.

Healthy Remedies completed 11/22/2010

I know I should eat more of these kinds of 'things' ... but actually, I was only in this one for the colors. I enjoy working from life. Especially when the lighting stays the same long enough to complete the painting. 12"x9" oil on linen.

Blue Bowl and Fruit completed 11/9/2010

Just a fun and simple still life painting ... done from life. The colors seem to go well together, to me. 8"x6" oil on linen.

Old Radnor Bridge Site completed 11/6/2010

Steve showed me this site in Radnor park. They're in the process of registering this site historically. It was interesting enough for me to paint. I like the way the trees lead your eye the area of primary focus. It was started plein air, then finished in the studio. 6"x8" oil on linen.

Orange Glow completed 9/9/2010

Late day warm light is great! That's what drew me to paint this one. The location of this painting is in Cedar Hill, Tn. We'll be painting there soon in pleinair with the Chestnut Group ... I'm certainly looking forward to that! 20"x16" oil on masonite.

Peaceful Place completed 8/12/2010

Here's the second painting that was entered in the Roswell, GA paintout. The water was basically finished on the first day, so the rain didn't really effect me to bad at this location. This painting is 16"x12" and 'Inclined to Hear' is 10"x8". Both are painted on linen and the medium is oil. Both are for sale, if you are interested.

Inclined to Hear completed 8/12/2010

I entered a paintout in Roswell, GA last month. This was the first paintout for me and it lasted for three days. Each of the 75 artists could enter only two paintings and the paintings couldn't be touched up in the studio ... so, it was totally a pleinair competition. This is a painting from under the Vickery Creek walk across bridge. I arrived late and only had two days to paint ... the plan was to pick a morning spot/painting and an evening spot/painting for two days. These would be my two paintings to enter into the competition. The sunlight would be basically the same. However, it rained BIGTIME the night after the first day. The creek waters were about one and a half feet DEEPER on the morning of the second day and the water went from being very transparent to being opaque and muddy! I had to finish the painting from memory. The best part was that I won second place with this painting! Thank you, Lord ... for an experience that I'll never forget!!

Radnor Morning completed 7/26/2010

This is a view of Radnor Lake plenty early in the morning. I get sleepy whenever I'm reminded of how early I had to get up that morning to be there to capture this view. It's a peaceful place. 14"x11" Oil on linen.

The Heron at Radnor Lake completed 7/19/2010

The heron at Radnor is always on time for breakfast early in the morning about every day. Most folks who walk the trails no him. The colors on the lake this particular morning were awesome! It's a great place to visit. The last time I was there I saw two large owls in a tree about thirty feet from me ... fourteen deer on the trails ... and many friendly people along the trails as well. 30"x24" Oil on linen.

The Prodigal's Father completed 6/28/2010

1st Baptist Church in Nashville has a art contest every year. The theme is 'The Prodigal Son'. You could paint a picture from the perspective of either the son, brother, or the father. I decided to participate this year and chose the perspective of the father. This painting makes me think of the way the Heavenly Father desires for His children to come back when we go astray.
Thanks Larry for posing for me! 18"x24" Oil on linen.

Winter Warmth completed 6/10/2010

Tennessee finally got some snow this past Winter season. I saw this barn on the way to work one morning and took a few photos. This one was fun to paint! 12"x9" Oil on linen.

Nathan Reading completed 5/20/2010

Nathan likes the old time british cap ... and reading as well. 8"x10" Oil on linen.

Dad from Life completed 4/29/2010

As he was watching a baseball game, my dad let me practice a little 'from life' painting. Kind of impressionistic looking ... don't you think? 9"x12" Oil on linen.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Cheekwood Pond completed 4/20/2010

Most of this painting was done plein-air. The blue sky reflecting into the pond is what I tried to capture in this painting. 12"x9" Oil on linen.

Across from Polk Garden completed 4/2/2010

This view from The James K. Polk garden was spotted by a friend of mine who was actually painting it before I came along. I thought it turned out half-way-decent. 11"x14" Oil on linen.

Bethel Place completed 3/19/2010

This mansion is titled Bethel Place. It's really much nicer than this painting shows. It was built in 1855 and can be found just a few miles southwest of Columbia, TN. I sure wish it would have been sunny instead of overcast, rainy, and cold. This is the first painting that I painted from inside my car (at least it was started inside my car). 12"x9" Oil on linen.

On Columbia Square completed 3/15/2010

The lighting, dimension, angles, and color shown in this scene inspired to paint this one. It's not very big ... measuring only 10"x8". Oil on linen.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Memory Lane completed 2/20/2010

We actually got some snow this year. I made it a point to get out and take photos of some of it to paint later ... this photo inspired me. I'm really liking the surface of this Belgian linen. It's texture isn't overly rough and the weave seems to be slightly irregular. Thanks Mr. Richard Schmid, for suggesting it on your website. Oil on linen at 12"x9".

Polk Garden completed 3/5/2010

Getting ready for a show at Columbia, TN. This is a view of the garden behind the James K. Polk home built in 1816. It would have been nice to show the garden as it would appear in full bloom in a month or so ... but hey ... it looked interesting enough to me just the other day. Oil on linen at 12"x9".

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Evening Tree completed 1/10/2010

Just a quick little landscape depicting evening light on a golden leafed tree. It's 10"x8" in oil.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Snowman & Apples completed 12/15/09

Thought I'd try a simple still life. Just gathering a few things around the house that might be fun to paint is all there was to it. It's 12"x9" on a slick masonite panel bought from a local art supply store.

The Old Homeplace completed 11/10/09

This painting was different for me in that it's the first of many to be painted on the surface that Richard Schmid recommends. It's a double primed Belgian linen canvas taped to a piece of masonite to be stretched later (should the painting be a success). I like how it turned out ... so, I'll be stretching it soon. It's 14" x 11" in size.

Brisk Morning completed 12/15/08

This painting is an attempt to loosen up my style a bit. I enjoy working on the slick masonite surface. It helps to show the brushstrokes better and to give a more spontaneous feel to the painting. The size is 12" x 9".

Portrait of Emma Grace completed 9/13/09

This little girl was a joy to paint. Thanks, Linda, for letting me paint her! I hope you will enjoy viewing the painting over the years. The size of this painting is 24" x 30".

Thursday, September 10, 2009

Plein air at The Wilds completed 8/18/09

I love to paint plein air! This one is just a 10"x8". We tubed down this creek just a day or so before ... what fun!

Portrait of Mr. Vance completed 8/15/09

This commission will probably prove to be one of the best opportunities for me, as a portrait artist. I'm very thankful to Richland Fine Art Gallery for considering me to paint it. I understand that Mr. Vance was a very gracious individual. The size is 30"x40".

Portrait of Kristy completed 12/24/08

Kristy is a special person! She can't walk now ... but she will one day. Her mother wanted an oil portrait of Kristy walking with the Lord on the beach so to be an encouragement for Kristy. I enjoyed painting the portrait. The size is 24"x30".

Saturday, July 11, 2009

Portrait of Kathy completed 7/11/09

David and Kathy enjoy their two dogs. Thanks David for letting me paint this portrait. I hope you and Kathy enjoy it for many years to come. The painting measures 14"x11".

Thursday, May 7, 2009

My friend Joe completed 5/5/09

Joe is a very lean man with very strong hands. He was an excellent model for this type of character. His hat added a lot also! This painting is 18x24.

Cowboy at the BRR completed 3/15/09

Thanks to a friend who works on a special ranch that ministers to kids of all ages, I was able to get the photo used as reference for this painting. I believe horses were made to be oil painted. This one is 16x20.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

LBL Santa completed 2/18/09

This Santa represents a mid 1800's Santa as he gave a speech at the Land Between the Lakes Home Place. In those days, children were happy to to get an orange in their stocking come Christmas morning. I enjoyed painting this one very much! 12 x 16 inches are the dimensions.

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Portrait of Billy completed 1/17/09

This portrait has special meaning to me because it's someone that I've known for a very long time. He has been a great influence in my life. Thanks Chief, for the faithful help you've been to me over the many years! This painting is only 11 x 14.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Austin and Kaden completed 11/2/08

These two brothers were fun to paint. I tried to capture the warm light at the end of the day in this portrait. Special thanks to the parents who have allowed me to paint all their children. This painting is 30"x24".

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Portrait of Kelly completed 8/12/08

Her mother took this photo years ago. The words 'purity' and 'character' came to my mind when I first saw the photo. I hope those qualities are still communicated thru this painting. I enjoyed painting this piece! The size is 24"x30".

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

Portrait of Ashley completed 7/7/08

Working with shading and colors in the shadows can get mighty tricky. When the top half of the figure is totally in the shadows and the bottom gradually comes into the light ... it gets more tricky. Actually, it turned out rather nice. More important, the parents were pleased.

Thursday, June 5, 2008

Portrait of Harrell completed 6/2/08

The relationship between these partners is very unique. It would be great for you to see these boarder collies in action as they herd the cattle as needed. I've never seen anything quite like it.

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Portrait of Katrina completed 4/9/08

This little girl is as cute as a button. Her parents were very pleased with the portrait and are interested in purchasing portraits of their other children.

Saturday, March 8, 2008

Portrait of Lilybelle completed 2/23/08

My first painting of someone's pet. Lilybelle isn't supposed to be in this chair as you can maybe tell by her expression.

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Portrait of Angele completed 1/22

This painting is my first attempt at a full figure in oil. The two light sources proved to be tough, but one being a warm light and the other a cool was fun to try to capture on canvas.

Plein air BRR ranch house completed 8/07

I've helped take a group of kids from our church to summer camp for years, but this is the first year I've taken my paint box. This little sketch was a blast to paint. Drawing and painting from life is one of my favorite things to do, although it can be a challenge.

Tuesday, January 1, 2008

Starr Horse completed 11/07

A friend at work let me come out to her horse farm and take some photos. I must have taken 200 photos of horses, cows, trees, valleys and such. She has a awesome 700 acer farm. Anyway, as I was about to leave ... this horse posed beautifully for me as though to say, "if you want to paint a real horse, then check out this profile!" Well, I said "fine with me". The rest is history.

Portrait of Dr. Steve completed 8/07

I wanted to have a VIP commission in my portfolio, so I approached my friend Dr. Steve who serves as a high school principal. It's the largest oil portrait I've done thus far. He was very pleased with it.

Monday, December 31, 2007

Portrait of Bill & Will completed 11/07

I just finished this portrait of a gentleman and his grandson. Will is reaching out to something very special. I wonder what it could be. I'm very happy with the way the expressions worked out! Thanks for looking and go ahead and post feedback to let me know if you like it. Thanks!
